About Belt Safety Factors

Safety Factor = Breaking Force / Operating Tension

Minimum Safety Factors:

  • Steel Cord: 6.7 (steady), 4.8 (startup)
  • Fabric/Textile: 10.0 (steady), 7.0 (startup)

Purpose:

Safety factors ensure the belt can withstand operating tensions with adequate margin for: dynamic loads, splice efficiency, belt degradation, and unexpected conditions.

Breaking Strength:

The breaking strength (N/mm) is the force per unit width that will cause belt failure. Multiply by belt width to get total breaking force.
